Overview
Deleting files is different from deleting an entire order. A single file — such as a photo, a scan, or a document — can only be deleted by the party that originally uploaded it: either the lab or the practice. This applies organization-wide — any team member with the right permission at the same lab or the same practice can delete the file, regardless of which individual user or shared account originally uploaded it. Learn how to grant permissions at the lab in Manage user permissions.
Role | What can be deleted |
Lab | Files uploaded by the lab — deletable by any lab team member with the right permission, regardless of who exactly uploaded it. |
Practice | Files uploaded by the practice — deletable by any practice team member with the right permission, regardless of who exactly uploaded it. |
Note: A file uploaded by the practice therefore can't be deleted by the lab — and vice versa. Learn how to delete an entire order in Delete an order.
How to delete a file
The deletion path depends on how the file got into the order — uploaded directly, or sent via chat.
Route 1 — Directly uploaded files
Open the order and go to the file overview.
For files you uploaded yourself, a trash-can icon appears below the preview.
Click the trash-can icon and confirm the deletion.
Note: The trash-can icon only appears on files you uploaded yourself — it's missing on the other party's files
Route 2 — Files sent via chat
Files sent via chat are tied to the corresponding message. To delete such a file, you delete the message itself.
Open the order and switch to the chat on the right.
Find the message with the file you want to delete.
Click the small arrow icon next to the message.
Select Delete.
Important: The same rule applies in the chat: you can only delete messages with files that you — as the lab or as the practice — uploaded yourself. And only if your account has the delete permission (more on this in Manage user permissions).
FAQs
Can I delete a file the practice uploaded?
No. As the lab, you can only delete files you uploaded yourself. Files that come from the practice can only be deleted by the practice itself.
Is deleting a file the same as deleting an order?
No. When you delete a file, the order stays intact — only the individual file is removed. An entire order is deleted through a separate route, described in Delete an order.
Why don't I see a trash-can icon on a file?
The trash-can icon only appears on files you uploaded yourself. It's missing on the other party's files — regardless of whether you have delete permission or not.
